Tom Bentley's career in computer technology started in the 1950's. He was in the Navy when the technology was introduced for decoding cryptic messages. He went on to work for insurance companies, using the computer for massive data processing tasks. And pictured here in 1960, Tom was an IBM Supervisor at the Black Clawson Paper Company in Watertown, NY. Tom continued in management roles until he retired from Digital Equipment Company. "a new breed of specialists has grown up to tend the machines...a sort of solemn priesthood of the computer purposely separated from ordinary laymen...[they] speak an esoteric language that some suspect is just their way of mystifying outsiders. They have taught computers to play ticktacktoe, blackjack, checkers....and even try its hand at beatnik poetry." |
