PARDON TILLINGHAST was born at Seven Cliffs, Sussex, Eng., 1622, and died at Providence, R. I., January 29, 1718. He was the most prominent merchant of his day, and a very useful citizen, being Deputy six years, and Overseer of the Poor, a member of the Town Council, etc. In 1681 he became the pastor of the First Baptist Church, the building for which, as well as the land, he is said to have given. He married Lydia, the daughter of Philip and Lydia (Masters) Taber, on April 16, 1664, and died 1718. Issue, among others:

PHILIP TILLINGHAST, born at Providence, R. I., October, 1669, and died March 14, 1732, was a wealthy merchant, and took part actively in public life. He joined Captain Gallup's expedition against Canada, 1690; was a Deputy for twelve terms, Assistant
to the Governor 1714, and a member of the Town Council for eleven years.

His wife was Martha, the daughter of Jonathan and Sarah (Borden) Holmes, and they were married May 3, 1692. She was born 1675, and died March 10, 1729. Their daughter Anne, married her cousin, NICHOLAS POWER IV.

Pardon Tillinghast, b. 1622, at Seven Cliffs, Sussex Co., England. He served in Cromwell's Army. Came to Providence abt. 1646. He was Deputy 1672-1700. Member of Town Council 1688-1707. April 14, 1711, he deeded his house called the Baptist meeting house, "situated between the Town Street and salt water, together with the lot whereon said meeting house standeth, to the Church and their successors, for the Christian love, good will and affection which I bear to the Church of Christ in said Providence, the which I am in fellowship with, and have the care of as being elder of said Church."

He d. Jan. 29, 1718. His will, proved Feb. 11, 1718, says: "I do bequeath my life and spirit into the hands of the Fountain of life and Father of spirits, from whom I have received it, and my body to the dust from whence it came, in hope of a resurrection to eternal life."

Inventory,1,542, 4s. 3d. He was buried in his own lot at the south end of the town. He m. (2nd) April 16, 1664, Lydia, dau. of Philip and Lydia (Masters) Taber.
